Lawyer for doctor convicted of illegally prescribing drugs files three new motions in case

NEW BERN, Craven County — The Raleigh attorney who represented a New Bern physician convicted of illegally prescribing opioids is disputing the way the outcome of the case was represented by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.


Deborrah L. Newton with Newton Law says that while Dr. Sanjay Kumar was convicted after a four-week jury trial of five counts of prescribing outside the practice of medicine and not for a legitimate medical purpose, these charges were connected to five individual prescriptions with proceeds totaling $1,000. Newton adds that the press release issued by U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon neglected to mention that Kumar was found not guilty of 14 similar charges.
